What Did You Get Up to in 2020

Well, it’s been an unpredictable year hasn’t it and for many of us we’ve had to find creative ways to continue out passion for photography.

Back in April, as the first lookdown started you couldn’t buy a second hand macro lens for love nor money. And as I’d swapped systems from Canon to Micro 4/3 in 2019 that was a lens I hadn’t added to my arsenal. After a bit of hunting I was luck to find a mint condition one on mpb.com and these are a few of the images I captured on my kitchen table.

Focus stacking is a technique often used in macro photography to increase the depth of field. For this image I created a stack of 17 images captured at f8 and then merged them in Helicon Focus

Sometimes though you don’t want that big depth of field so this image is a single frame again at f8. The yellow in the background, is the dandelion flower that is refracted in the water droplet suspended in the dandelion seed

If you’ve every tried this sort of shot with water droplets, you’ll know how tricky it is to avoid ending up with a soggy mess. There’s a trick to getting water droplets to form nicely & hold in place while you take your shot. What you need is some glycerine & make a solution of about 30% glycerine / 70% water  and then you’ll find that your droplets bead nicely.
